Message from Chris Kilmer, FreeKareem.org Treasurer November 29th, 2010

Dear Supporters,

Two weeks ago, we broke the joyous news that Kareem Amer had been released from imprisonment in Egypt. The Free Kareem Coalition worked in tandem with many organizations and individuals over the past four years to raise awareness of Kareem’s fight for justice, and with Kareem’s release, it is time to call an end to our mission.

A component of the Coalition’s work was raising funds to go towards organizing “Free Kareem” rallies and publicity campaigns events around the globe. We raised USD$4,368.26, to be exact — and sent $1,026.80 to several organizers to reimburse the costs of printing flyers, buying placards and other materials to aid in mounting effective public demonstrations.

Another USD$500 was sent to Kareem during his prison sentence, for the provision of food, clothing and other material items for his physical comfort. This was sent through a mutual friend of Kareem’s and ours, Shahinaz Abdel Salam.

As of today, USD$2,841.46 remains in the Coalition’s fund. As Kareem’s release date approached, we intended to deliver these remaining funds to Kareem, in hopes that he would use them as he saw fit after his prison release.

However, after due consideration, Kareem has informed us that he would prefer not to receive the funds raised on his behalf. Instead, he said we were free to do with the funds whatever we thought was appropriate.

To that end, we have elected to donate the remaining funds in their entirety to the press-freedom advocacy group, Reporters Without Borders. This organization has worked tirelessly around the globe to advocate for the rights of journalists to speak and write freely, in the fight for a free press — the very essence of democracy. Reporters Without Borders also worked tirelessly to raise awareness of Kareem’s plight, and continues the struggle for press freedoms in his homeland of Egypt.

We believe that this donation is a perfect capstone to the Coalition’s efforts to free a budding journalist who only dared to speak his mind, and was punished severely for it. We hope that the donation may help, in whatever small way, to aid bloggers and journalists like Kareem, whose identities may not even yet be known.

The donation will be made in approximately one to two weeks from today, and proof of donation will be posted to this site in a follow-up message.

The Free Kareem Coalition wishes to thank the 86 individual donors who contributed to this important cause, and the many other individuals who offered advice and encouragement. We hope we made a difference, and sincerely wish that Kareem’s best days are ahead of him.

- Chris Kilmer, Treasurer

P.S. This message is translated into Arabic and published on MEYArabic here.

Update: Feel free to download the receipts here as confirmation of the donation to Reporters Without Borders.

Donation money being gradually sent to Kareem December 1st, 2007

Since the beginning of this year, we have been collecting donations from supporters of Kareem worldwide. We are comfortable with the amount we have raised so far and are now in the process of sending this money to Kareem in a careful and gradual process, with the help of trusted friends and local sources.

Below you will find two scans of a receipt that shows the money has been sent to Kareem Amer in prison. We will be sending 550 L.E ($100) a month from now on, providing receipts for proof in case of misunderstandings or doubts.

If you require more information about this transaction, please do not hesitate to contact our team, and we will guide you through the exact procedure.

Kareem’s birthday coming up! June 14th, 2007

The 17th of June marks Kareem’s 23rd birthday.

Here are the list of things that we want him to get for his birthday.

1. Clothes (between medium and large – Kareem is around 5’6 or 5’7 tall.)

2. Writing materials

3. Books (be careful with your selection, and remember that prison guards will see it before Kareem does. Therefore it’s very important to select something that will not trouble him.)

4. Food / sweets

5. Blanket

6. Postcards and birthday cards

7. Letters!

Please send any of the above to the address posted here.

Send an eCard and spread the word!

Free Kareem Donation Money April 30th, 2007

We would like to ensure our readers and supporters that we are in the process of writing an effective strategy on how to use the donated money so far in order to help Kareem as much as possible, at least through clothing, proper food, etc. Before we take any action however, we would like to discuss this further through direct collaboration with Kareem and his lawyers. We also wanted to collect enough money in order to act productively.

There have been complaints about us not making our donation process visible – this is because we have not put the money we collected in use, however all of the money is there and will be wired to Kareem somehow once we fully understand the logistics and once we figure out a way to do this as reliably as possible. Once we start doing this, we will document the process and put a financial log for tracking the money transfer, which we will make viewable through a spreadsheet on this website.

Rumors of the Free Kareem Coalition taking advantage of this campaign to make money is not true, and quite frankly we are surprised at these attempts to distract and discourage us.

Kareem is our friend – we would never betray or use him. We wouldn’t have done this much work for this campaign if we didn’t care about him, so please stop spreading rumors about how this campaign is being managed. Keep your criticisms clean of lies or rumors for the sake of Kareem himself. This is a fight for human rights. Let’s keep it that way.
