What You Can Do!

Why help?
Only international pressure will help secure Kareem’s release. At the very least, news of international support provides moral encouragement to Kareem and his attorneys. It will also send a message to officials who wish him harm: We’re watching!

Here’s What You Can Do To Help Kareem!

(Got other suggestions? Tell us!)
To skip to the letter-writing campaign, click here.

  • Sign this petition, as well as the others on the ‘Petitions’ list! (Look at the sidebar)

  • Send words of encouragement to Kareem. Please visit our Write to Kareem! page.
  • Fill out this form is you wish to get more involved (e.g. joining rallies): I Want to Get Involved!

  • Please take a few minutes to send an eCard to a friend or colleague and link them to this site for updates and information. Free Kareem ePostcards!.
  • Visit our Free Kareem Store! This store is a great way to help spread awareness on Kareem’s case.
  • Reporters Without Borders states that Egypt is bucking to host a stage of the United Nations-sponsored Internet Governance Forum in 2009 (ironically, the country is on the group’s list of 13 Internet enemies). Lobby against Egypt’s inclusion in this event by contacting Nitin Desai, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for Internet Governance:

Please write about Kareem Amer in your blogs, keep the Wikipedia entry on his case up-to-date, and place the Free Kareem logo on your sites with a link to www.FreeKareem.org. See also our photo gallery on our Facebook group (requires free registration), and make use of them as you wish.

    Free Kareem!

  • Amnesty has provided an easy way to contact some important Egyptian officials – just fill out this form! Your letter (a template is provided) will be sent to the U.S. Ambassador, and copies will be sent to Egypt’s Minister of the Interior and Minster of Justice. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and you have the option of sending the letter by e-mail, snail-mail, or fax: Condemn the Four-Year Sentence of Egyptian Blogger Karim Amer.
  • Invite your friends to visit www.FreeKareem.org, and encourage them to follow the suggestions listed here. Discuss Kareem’s case with your religious, social, and humanist groups. Read English translations of Kareem’s writings that got him in jail. Share it with your friends and discuss them. A teacher told us she will be reading them to her literature class!
  • Share our YouTube Video Collection with your friends!
  • Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has its own blog tool; confidentiality of any information submitted by bloggers is guaranteed. The Coalition encourages you to sign up. The funds raised from this blog service enable RSF to help Kareem, and other bloggers living under in difficult conditions.
  • Write letters to government officials, diplomats, human rights groups, local media outlets, and the United Nations:
  • In your letter, please make clear the following (thanks to English PEN):

  • Condemn the four-year prison sentence placed on Kareem Amer, who was peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression;
  • Express deep concern at the conditions of Kareem Amer’s detention, and whether he is being treated humanely and given full access to medical care and family visits; and
  • Urge the Egyptian government to clearly implement the international standards set out by the ICCPR to which the state of Egypt is a signatory and repeal laws violating these standards.
  • You can find sample letters in our Sample Letters section, or refer to the petitions (at the sidebar) when writing your letter. Don’t forget to attach a press kit!
